Learning from surgical complications in pediatric neurosurgery
1109 11:00-11:15
Interim Meeting of AASPN/303A
Background and Purpose: I began my career as a neurosurgery resident in 1980, initially specializing in cerebrovascular disorders. However, since 1988, I shifted my focus to pediatric neurosurgery at Tohoku University Hospital and Miyagi Children's Hospital. Over approximately 40 years, I have performed a wide variety of surgeries, primarily on pediatric brain tumors, moyamoya disease, congenital anomalies, and other pediatric cerebrovascular disorders. Now retired and no longer engaged in clinical practice, I wish to share my numerous misunderstandings, failures, and regrets from my surgical experiences with you all.
Methods: This presentation will focus on my experiences with surgeries on deep brain tumors, such as craniopharyngiomas. I will discuss the complications encountered during and after surgery, unexpected situations, and the lessons learned. Through specific case studies, I will highlight key points in the prevention and management of complications.
Conclusion:From my experiences, I have gained valuable insights into strategies for reducing surgical complications and improving postoperative patient care. I believe these findings are particularly useful for those practicing in the field of pediatric neurosurgery.
