Neuroendoscopic septostomy - Asimple procedure with versatile uses
1110 08:00-08:20
Interim Meeting of AASPN/303A
Neuroendoscopic septostomy is the procedure where the septum pellucidum, which separates the two lateral ventricles, is perforated using an endoscope to communicate the two lateral ventricles.
This procedure is essential in 1) the management of unilateral hydrocephalus, 2) the conversion of a two shunts procedure in to a single shunt procedure in the management of hydrocephalus secondary blockage of both foramina of Monro 3) in the management of cavum septum pellucidum and cavum vergae lesions and 4) for cross ventricular tumour visualisation with or without endoscopic biopsy.
Understanding of the anatomy of the septum pellucidum and its blood supply as well as its relationship to the adjacent paraventricular structures are crucial to ensure that this procedure is performed safely. These, together with the surgical techniques and indications for septostomy will be described in the presentation.
